I Wish I Could Save You

I don't even know where to begin. Forgive the stram-of-consciousness nature of this post, but that is the only way I will be able to get these random thoughts/highlights/ramblings all in one sitting.

Our screenings have been going incredibly well....at OU, Heather danced/chased people/swung in a Chewbacca costume...at Moore High School, all of the teachers thought Heather was a student...we got quoted/featured in a newspaper from our OSU screening...we thought we left our projector cord at Mustang High, so we spent 40 minutes and a year of our lives worth of stress trying to find it...we didn't find it but we bought one for $8 at Radio Shack...not only did UCO put on a killer screening, but they also had free root beer floats...we made some amazing new friends at Mid-America Christian University...one of the girls knew Kayla Garver...such a weird, small world...we went to a 24-hour Trucker restaurant...I punched Tessa's chicken sandwich...we blindfolded and surprised Heather by taking her to Taco Bell...it's her least favorite restaurant...we had to drive 3 hours round trip today, just to get to a bank...we got pulled over last night for going the speed limit...the officer recommended we go a bit slower than the actual speed limit because they have had 8 traffic accidents in the past three days involving cows...we saw the bloodstains of said accidents...at first we thought we were $500 over in our merchandise sales, but we were actually $80 under...they do not make people like Crystal Mayhue anymore...I was told that I was creepy enough that I should try to grow a mustache...we had a near-fatal experience in the van trying to pass a slow truck on a 2-lane highway...I stayed calm, cool, and collected...seriously.

On an important note, Kelly Clarkson's album leaked online and I cannot stop listening. She has really outdone herself. "Cry" slapped me in the face and made me do the laugh-cry.

On a serious note, please pray for my friend, Kaleb. I love him very much and want him to be safe.

I have started to really feel the weight of what I'm doing in the past few days and it is difficult to describe. I have also started to really miss my friends and family. I am having the time of my life and I don't wanna be anywhere else, so maybe you could all come visit me!

I love you all.

Keep Your Eyes Open,
Brandon

Our First Screening

We had our first official screening last night.  It was at the McCullock's church, Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene, and it was pretty amazing.  Everyone there seemed to respond to the film and, more importantly, they acted on what they saw.  I cannot thank everyone that was there enough.  Their hearts and actions were beyond inspiring.

Special shout out to the McCullock family!  They have been such gracious, giving, amazing hosts.  We would all like to be adopted any time we are in Oklahoma please.  Thank you.

My team was so amazing.  I am so excited and humbled to be sharing my life with them for the next three months.  They really are my family.

We are sitting at McAlister's Deli right now, stealing the free wireless and trying to work fast before our computers die because there is exactly one outlet in the entire store and it is located right beneath the fountain drinks.  Please believe that I thought about posting up right underneath it and working, but I restrained myself.

I have already met some incredible people on the road that I hope to be friends with for the rest of my life.  Kaleb McCullock and I have entered a bromance.  Be warned, Oklahoma!  Crystal Mayhue is my best friend.  We have met once.  I haven't even officially met Mark Nehrenz, Chris Loper, Michelle Richards, Ramsey Payne, Paige Wehunt, Kayla Davis, Rowdy Goodin, Alisha Bhaumik, Wade Watkins, Abigail Estes, Bryan Marlett, Angela Syverson, Erin Haworth, Taylor Spicer, Molly McGuire, or Amanda Pasierb yet, but I know I will love you all.  I am so ready for these screenings!  The movie is incredible and I can't wait for you all to see it.

With Hope,
Brandon

The Royal Motor Inn

So, yesterday, I did something I've been looking forward to for many weeks now. The Spring 2009 Middle America Roadies launched from San Diego on our journey to the amber waves of grain in the midwest. It was amazing how many tears were shed between people who have only known each other for a month, not wanting to leave each other. We took off by the side of the Deep South team, because we were all going to stay with Gabe's grandparents.

As we were driving through Yuma, Arizona, however, the toad had an idea of its own. The Deep South's van's oil gauge dropped to zero and they were stranded on the side of a desert road. We pulled over behind them to see if we could help. As we began to realize that it was a major problem and that it was nearing midnight and that we had slept about 8 hours in the past two nights, we decided we would have to have the van towed to a motel down the interstate a few exits.

We first went to the Quality Inn for some amount of quality that wouldn't break the bank. They were, however, filled up, so we found the Royal Motor Inn of Yuma, Arizona. I have honestly never experienced anything quite so shady in all of my life. I'm pretty sure Norman Bates himself was running the motel. He wasn't terribly happy to see us for some reason, but apparently every other patron of the Inn was, as they shamelessly stared out their respective windows at the sight of two large black vans reading "Invisible Children" on the sides and back.

We were also curiously surrounded by people just sitting in their turned-off cars. We were also told the next day that this motel is the place in Yuma where lots of shady business occurs, if you understand what I'm saying. As we entered the room, we were greeted by a pile of toenail clippings. They were kindly placed next to a lovely chair, accented by blood stains. We weren't given soap or shampoo either, which is very trivial when compared to the blood and clippings, but it's the principle of the matter.

As my teammates carefully placed their sleeping bags on top of the beds, I took the plunge and dove beneath the blankets. I know, I shouldn't have, but I was seriously exhausted. I also forgot to mention that this motel was connected to the "Burrito King", which hosts over 400 farmers every morning at about 5:00 AM. Directly behind the motel is a trailer park.

We are currently on the road and almost out of Arizona. Even between there and here, we have experienced a few missed exits on the highway, an Italian feast in the van, and a short but sweet reunion with the Mountain West team. We also named our van. His name is Dillenberg Fuentes. The Dillenberg is in honor of Margie, and the Fuentes is in honor or Heather's random request that his last name be Fuentes.

We are about to drive straight through the entire night to try and get to Oklahoma City by morning. We are currently outside of Flagstaff and it is 9:00. Prayers and caffeine are my friend. The gas light also just turned on. Gotta go.

Brandon

Whew!

Sometimes, I just have to sit back and breathe. This place is many things: amazing, a time warp, tiring, difficult, rewarding, full of crazy people, transformative, infuriating, the only place I'm meant to be right now. Sometimes, I feel all of that at the same time! I just want to update everyone on what has been going on for the past few days...

We have celebrated a couple of roadies' birthdays this week. Those celebrations included a few different cakes and some spectacular karaoke. My selections varied from Carrie Underwood to N Sync, Lynyrd Skynyrd to Lil' Kim. It was enjoyable to say the least.

We got a new teammate named Tessa. She is a native Californian and she is amazing. She already fits in perfectly with Andre, Heather, and me. She is hard-working and extremely compassionate. She prefers N Sync to the Backstreet Boys. And when she concentrates, her face looks like she is very sad. But she's just concentrating.

I guess I should explain the other roadies on my team to you as well. Andre is amazing. He cares about everyone and everything, but always makes you feel like you matter uniquely to him. There are very few people like that in the world. He runs on very little sleep and he always wears a vest, a beanie, and pointy boots.

Heather is my homegirl. She is only five feet tall, but she has more personality and fire than most people twice her size. Ok, so I don't think anyone is actually ten feet tall, but you get the picture. Besides being the hardest working person I have ever met, she is also one of those people who commits completely to anything she takes on. She is also one of the most loving friends I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She makes me happy.

I have met some seriously mind-blowing people here. I have no doubt that I will be friends with many of them for the rest of my life. Also, I absolutely adore every single person I work for and with. Who can say that?!

Our house has become distinctly smellier, which I guess should be expected with 50 people. It has also become a second home in a matter of three and a half weeks. Weird, huh?

We finally got to see a pre-screening of a rough draft of the new media we will be showing on this tour and it was so good! I wanted to run out of the building and tell everyone I saw about this organization and how much they are really doing to help end the longest war in the history of Africa. The Mid-Atlantic roadies will be making a stop at Christ Church in April and I sincerely hope that all of you go to the screening, not only to see what I've been doing, but to experience life-change.

Speaking of...I am still experiencing that in different ways daily. I am learning to edit my thoughts and not say everything I think. It has become second nature for me to say "I'm tired" or "I'm hungry" when I am tired or hungry, but with this many people working so hard towards a unique goal, there is no reason to express it. We are all tired and hungry most of the time and there is no time for complaining. I am also experiencing 60-80 hour work weeks. We are never actually off the clock, but since we don't get paid, that doesn't matter. And, even though it is tiring, no one seems to be over it. We can all see our hard work turning into results and it is rewarding. Plus, when you are really doing things you love, it gets easier.

I do miss you all very much. If you think about it, please pray for my grandmother. She is really not doing well. Also, you should call or facebook my Mom and encourage her. This is super hard for her and for all of my family. I can't be there to love on them, so if you think about it, send al the love you can muster their way. Thank you in advance for that.

I'm going to leave you with some song lyrics that are helping me out immensely while I'm here. They are simple, but meaningful. I'm not even going to tell you who it is, because I don't enjoy being judged. :)

The struggles I’m facing,
The chances I’m taking
Sometimes they knock me down but
No I’m not breaking
The pain I’m knowing
But these are the moments
that I’m going to remember most
Just got to keep going
There’s always going to be another mountain
I’m always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose,
Ain’t about how fast I get there,
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

Making A Real Difference

The staff here at Invisible Children held a mock screening for us tonight to show us how it will be done when we go on the road and it got me so amped to get out there and start! On one hand, this training/booking/bonding with 50 other people experience is perfect in every way. On the other hand, however, I can't wait to get out there and get a high school/college/church/anywhere pumped and excited for a war going on in a country they have most likely never been to. We will be showing new media that we haven't even seen before, but I have total trust and faith in these filmmakers...which leads me to their media.

If you have ever seen any of Invisible Children's movies or video podcasts, you already know the insane standard of excellence they keep themselves to. And if you haven't...what are you waiting for?!? Go now to invisiblechildren.com. Go to the Media section and watch every video you can. If you have never seen The Rough Cut, GO, or any of the bracelet movies, you are seriously missing out. I would not hesitate to say that purchasing any of them is a completely worthy investment. Besides seeing an amazing, life-changing film, you will also be supporting a cause greater than any I have supported before. It is a cause rooted in love, humility, action, big ideas, creativity, and wise choices. And no, I have not been drinking any kool-aid. I came to these realizations all by myself.

I also want to take a moment and thank anyone who has supported me thus far in any way. I have already experienced major life change here and I know there is immeasurably more to come. If there are any of you who have never actually checked out Invisible Children, I encourage you to do so. It is truly an incredible organization that I am so proud to be a part of. I love and miss you all. I think of you every day when I am tired or need strength, because it is an EXHAUSTING process. Some of the things they ask seem impossible, but you would be surprised what you can accomplish with resolve, hard work, and a bit of favor.

Keep Your Eyes Open,

Brandon

The Rescue

Hello family and friends!

I apologize for the lack of updates this week. You have no idea how crazy this week has been. Still amazing and still exhausting. I had been getting discouraged this week because of some stuff at work that I'm not sure if I can share yet, but yesterday, all of my fears and worries were eradicated. Our national event is going to be called "The Rescue". It will happen on April 25th and even though I can't say much about the details yet, it is going to be an amazing, life-changing experience. The staff here at Invisible Children are some of the most incredible people I have ever had the honor of knowing. They are excellent at all they do and they are selfless, humble, hysterically funny, completely loving examples of who I want to be someday.

I have been learning a lot about myself in these past two weeks. And, my goodness, it seems so much longer than that. I have learned that I can do more than I initially think i can if I focus and give all that I have. I have begun to learn the art of being selfless. You don't really have a choice when living with 50 people and I don't always get it right but I'm learning. I have learned that I'm a fairly good judge of character. I can kind of "get" people within a few minutes of meeting them. I am also learning things that are not so fun. I can talk too much and sometimes, silence is better. I can be a lot for some people to handle and I have to read situations to know when to pull back. Also, when I am pushed to the edge of myself, I tend to want to vent to other people, when I should take inner inventory first.

All of this is part of the messy, beautiful process that I am going through. I am still terrified of certain aspects of this tour, but I know I am supposed to be here and I know that I am not one of those people who sits there and watches life go by. I am alive. I am invested in the greater good of humanity. I am not remotely close to perfect but I am doing my best with what I have been given.

With Hope,

Brandon

Of Burritos and Beaches

Well, it finally happened. I guess it had to. After a week of non-stop, intense, soul-searching work, we were let out early yesterday and given the rest of our Friday and all day today (Saturday) to do whatever we want. They also gave us a fun option if we chose it...a photo scavenger hunt (pictures below). We chose it. So, me and fourteen of my new closest friends loaded up in an Invisible Children for the adventure of a lifetime...

First, we drove downtwon to Urban Outfitters to take some pics for the scavenger hunt. We were so hipster, it was disgusting. Then, we drove past the most beautiful stretch of beach I have ever seen. When we actually pulled over to the beach, it was ridiculous. The sun was setting. We took amazing pictures. It was flawless.

Next, we headed to a little burrito dive to try California Burritos. For those unaware, these carbacious delicacies consist of a tortilla filled with carne asada, cheese, either salsa or sour cream, and...french fries. Don't judge it. Don't wonder. Just taste it. It is amazing. I died. Twice. We ate them on a pier looking at the ocean...and Clara accosted a statue...and got stuck.

As we loaded up in the van, a homeless woman on her bicycle heard us being loud and silly and joined us in a rendition of "I Believe I Can Fly". She was straight worshipping. As silly as we were, she was actually touched by us somehow. Of course, we took care of her and wished her well. Then, the dancing began. I'm not sure what kind of audio crack Beyonce puts into her songs, but even the hippest hipsters simply cannot resist shaking everything they've got when "Single Ladies" comes blasting through the speakers. Our dance party lasted a good 30 minutes. Mostly Beyonce and Britney.

Then, about eight of us went to a little place called OldTown. It is very hard to describe. But, it's kind of like an old Western town in the middle of San Diego. We had tacos and margaritas and fun. I rode a trolley. John thinks I'm psychic.

In the middle of all of this, there was more music, unheard of amounts of laughter, an awkward port-a-potty incident, an almost-ticket, an almost-hole in the top of our van, and of course, more food.

I am learning how to live well. I have always known and I have practiced this many times before, but never so much in such a short span of time. It is beautiful and exhausting. These people are already so close to me and I to them and it has not even been a full week. I am so excited for what the future holds but ready to embrace another full day. We are planning to shop, go to the beach, cook, and watch movies. Who knows if all of that will actually happen? I don't actually care because I know we will be alive. Completely alive.

With Hope,
Brandon

How Your Support Is Helping To Change The World

Hey friends and family,

Day 3 of my journey and I am even more tired, if that's possible. But, I have also never been so refreshed or felt so alive. It is amazing how powerfully God sustains you when you are exactly where He wants you...and I have no doubts I am there now.

I just wanted to take a moment to share with you some statistics and stories of how the support you are giving me through both money and prayers is going towards bringing about true life change all over this country and the world.

1. IC supports over 1,000 people regularly with finances, education, and job training/employment. Each of those 1,000 has an average family of 7 (!) so that makes over 7,000 people who are affected. In addition, our Schools for Schools program affects more than 8,000 students in Uganda, offering them quality education and more. That is over 15,000 people affected directly!!! That is not even counting the people we will never know about when these people become public officials, teachers, parents, and more.

2. The part that no one talks about though is actually my favorite part. This organization has screened the movie almost 5,400 times. The average attendance of one of those screenings is in the hundreds, so that is over 500,000 young people, here in America, who have experienced our life-changing media. They have been exposed to the truth that there is so much injustics going on in the world around us, but they can do something about it. Some of you who are older may or may not realize that this generation has become more and more politically, socially, and environmentally aware. I truly believe with all of my heart that IC has had a huge part. If each of those 500,000 has 10 friends that they share the message with, that is 5,000,000 young people who realize, through the power of media and storytelling, that they can utilize their passions, love, and creativity to become excited about sacrifice and giving to something bigger than themselves. That excites me beyond comprehension!

I just wanted to let you know briefly some of the ways you are affecting world change. I hope you are proud and I hope this inspires you in some small way to work a little harder today to choose to love and repel the darkness in the world.

Oh, and by the way, do yourself a huge favor and YouTube Kelly Clarkson's new single, "My Life Would Suck Without You". It is the bounciest, most energetic, perfect little pop song I have heard since, well, "Since U Been Gone".

I love and miss you all and if I don't answer a phone call or text, it is because I am in the middle of training and I can't answer during a session. They go all day and all night, but I am doing my best.

With Hope,

Brandon

A Day Well-Lived

I am not quite sure how to compact this day into one blog post but I sure will try.

First of all, I cannot express enough gratitude to all of you who gave me financial support and are still giving me support through your prayers. I know after only one day that this is where I belong for this chapter in my life and that it is going to be a life-altering experience.

As soon as I got off of the plane, I was greeted by two IC staff members with posters and balloons. We waited for three more roadies and headed to the roadie house. I can't wait to post pictures of the house. It is so much fun! There are couches everywhere, a projection screen to watch movies on, bunkbeds galore, and three refrigerators. We went right into a staff metting before I even unloaded my luggage from the van.

As soon as the meeting ended, we headed to downtown La Jolla (La Hoya is how it is pronounced). :) We ate dinner at an amazing restaurant called Jose's. The view of the ocean from there was literally breathtaking as the sun set. Next, we were surprised and taken to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. It was so amazing. They then escorted us into theater inside the museum where the filmmakers who made the original IC film spoke to us. They brought with them the first ever student who went through IC's entire scholarship program. She is now in her freshmen year at college in America. They then showed us an amazing documentary called "Man On Wire" about a man who walked a tightrope across the twin towers. Its connections to IC make sense when you watch it. They then told us that we were about to embark on a nearly impossible journey, as this is going to be the most intense, biggest tour ever. They are creating a new film now that we will see only a week before we tour it!

My return to the roadie house included two trips to the grocery store and back (long story, but I certainly got in my exercise for the day, as we live on a very high, winding hill).

I have, without doubt, never been so exhausted, but I don't think I have ever lived so much life in one day. In between all of these major events were lots more of the little things that make life fun for me. Paris & Nicole quotes, Fugees karaoke in a van with no air conditioning (have I mentioned it was 79 degrees today?), my reunion with John Shults and Jedidiah Jenkins, a "Single Ladies" dance-off, and a discussion of why Britney Spears is great. I will undoubtedly work harder and get less sleep in these next four and a half months than any other time in my life, but I will also live more than ever. I miss all of you terribly already, but I am doing well and making friends that I will have for life.

With Hope,
Brandon

One Week...

In exactly seven days, I will leave behind everything I have ever known to go live in a house with 50 people in San Diego. No, Anna, I did not make it past the initial audition round for The Real World. Instead, my journey with Invisible Children will begin with 49 other people who are equally nervous/terrified/excited to start changing the world. It doesn't seem real that it is almost here. I have been thinking about it and analyzing it for months now, and it's almost here.

A few days ago, the New Year began. 2009 will be fresh and new. A chance to start over. Some people love this idea. Some hate it. I am of the first camp. I don't want to erase the past year. It was a good one, after all. I graduated from college. I worked at a great organization for a few months. I ran a camp with Anna and Chelsea. I went on a random, spur-of-the-moment beach vacation with Ashleigh, Britni, and C Gallowa. I went to Disney World with my best friends. I experienced my closest friend get married on the beach. I got accepted by Invisible Children as a roadie. I turned 23. Yikes!

In 2009, I definitely have some goals and some ideas of how I would like things to go. I want this next five months with IC to be a time of change, openness, honesty with myself, and eye-opening clarity. I would love for this opportunity to make way for another opporunity of world-changing, but also bill-paying employment. I would love if nothing earth-shattering happened at home while I'm gone. You know, no deaths, engagements, or anything major.

But, I know that life, for whatever reason, never does exactly what you wish. Alanis was not kidding when she said it sneaks up on you. Some of the things that happened in 2008 truly came out of nowhere. I was blindsighted. They made me hurt. However, some of the sneakiness was amazing. I didn't expect some of the awesome things that happened. I guess that is what life boils down to. After all your plans and hopes, there are somethings you just can't control. There is death and life. Happiness and heartache. Random beach trips and random hospital trips. All I can really hope for 2009 is to be strong enough and present enough to handle or soak up the bad and the good.

Happy New Year.

With Hope,
Brandon

Right On The Edge

I am right on the edge of something new. Something great. Something that will change everything. I don't quite know how to explain it to everyone I know and love, but beginning January 11th, everything I know and everything I am is going to change.

I have been accepted to be a roadie with Invisible Children for their Spring tour of 2009. For almost five months, I will be spreading awareness and raising support for a cause greater than anything I have previously devoted my life to. At the base of that cause is love. Because of love, IC exists to stop injustice.

I know, from talking to friends of mine who have done this, that it changes everything. I have been told that going back to what you know is virtually impossible. It seems that it is beyond difficult to assimilate back into a society that is either unaware or turns a blind eye to the injustices of the world. Not that I will be some kind of fanatic. Unless maybe I will be.

Whatever the case, I am many things. Exhilirated. Terrified. Refreshed. Eager. Worried. I know that I am where I am supposed to be, and really, who can say that? Not many people that I know. I am fully aware that this will change everything. I think that, for the most part, that will be the best, healthiest thing I can do for myself, but I am a tiny bit concerned about some things that are already good in my life. Will they become less important? I would like to think that they won't, but how will I know until May 26th rolls around and I am suddenly pushed back into my old life? Unless maybe I won't be.

CHRISTMAS!!!

I tried, I really did. Every year, I wait until November 1st to start listening to my favorite kind of music...CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!! But, this year, I cracked. I actually started on October 23rd. But, it's alright. It's close enough to the 1st, right? AT any rate, every year I begin my Christmas music listening experience by playing the ultimate Christmas song...I am of course referring to "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey. Those jingling bells, the trills and runs, the background singers...everything about it is perfect and it always officially kicks off my season.

But, this year, there is also some new Christmas music to add to my ever-growing collection. First and most importantly, Carrie Underwood has released a 5-song Christmas EP, containing classics such as "What Child Is This", "The First Noel", and "Oh Holy Night". She sounds absolutely amazing, of course. Also, Elvis Duets is coming out, featuring old recordings of Elvis' Christmas songs with female singers like Carrie, Martina McBride, Wynonna, Sara Evans, and Amy Grant.

Faith Hill has an amazing Christmas album out that is much closer to the old 40's and 50's Christmas records I love than a Country album. Sixpence None the Richer also has an album out with half Christmas classics, and half new, original Christmas songs.

Nothing in this whole world makes me happier than playing Christmas music in front of the fireplace on a cold, drizzly day with a mug of hot cocoa and a blanket. It is pure bliss. If only I wasn't at work...oh well, my tomato soup and Pandora Christmas station will have to keep me warm til I can get home.

Change

What happens when the people who are supposed to always be there for you suddenly aren't?

What happens when the foolproof plans that you've laid out for your life don't work out as planned?

What happens when the life you've been living isn't enough?

I guess the only choice left is for me to take a huge, dangerous leap into the unknown, hoping I'll fall into something better. I am figuring out that I cannot control what happens to me. I can only control how I react. So, it's time for a different reaction.

100 Things About Me

I haven’t updated this in a VERY long time, but hey, what can you do? Life happens, I suppose. To welcome myself back, I am giving myself something to do that is totally unrelated to my job. Yes, I get paid to work, but I have been finishing projects too early for the past couple of weeks and I need to make my day stretch and last until 5:30, so without further ado, I present…

100 Things About Me

Yes, for those bored brave enough to take a little adventure, please feel free to comment on those that stick out to you. Some are embarrassing. Some are funny. Some are important. At any rate, enjoy and see if you really know me.

  1. I have to listen to my radio at odd intervals of volume. For instance, I usually listen to the volume set at 31. If I turn it down, it has to go to 29, not 30, because I am obsessive about it. I don’t know why. I think I even prefer even numbers, but for the sake of volume, they must be odd.
  2. If the need is so bad that I absolutely have to use the stall in a public restroom, I cannot leave the stall until the bathroom has cleared. I hate the flush and walk of shame to the sink, when everyone there knows what you just did. I hate it even more when someone does not care at all about taking the walk of shame or about the common sense that you do not make noise of any kind while in a stall. Especially not noises associated with what you are doing!
  3. It is really rare that I hear a song that I don’t like. Many people think this means that I don’t know the value of good music, but that is totally untrue. I know, for instance, that Patty Griffin is and forever will be better music than Britney Spears, but sometimes, I just want to escape and dance! I appreciate almost anything with a good melody, good voice, good production, good lyrics, or any combination.
  4. I have seen Mean Girls more times than any other movie. Space Jam is a close second.
  5. I wear a size 13 shoe.
  6. It really bothers me when people don’t use their turn signals.
  7. Weather has the strangest effect on me. My perfect day is chilly, overcast, and a bit drizzly. When I first walk outside, if it is weather that pleases me, I will be in a better mood all day. A cool breeze blowing on me can instantly change my attitude. It is very strange.
  8. I have really strong legs. Really strong.
  9. I think my lips are almost perfectly shaped.
  10. I don’t throw up ever. I have maybe thrown up five or six times in my entire life.
  11. I don’t really understand the fuss over Bruce Springsteen or U2.
  12. I have never seen Titanic or Pretty Woman.
  13. Sonic’s ice is a better treat than anything sweet. It is perfect and makes every drink taste better.
  14. Christmastime (November1 – December 26) is the time when I come most alive. Everything around me feels okay, even when it is not.
  15. I am afraid of not being loved.
  16. I think a lot. My brain feels like it is always zig-zagging. I wish I could learn how to quiet my thoughts.
  17. I hate seafood.
  18. I get upset when I am in the car alone, singing along to a song and I hit a wrong note or venture off pitch. Rare occurrences, but they still bother me. J
  19. I get very nervous and anxious when people get called out in front of large groups of people. I have cried for people before because I was so nervous or embarrassed for them.
  20. I once cried myself to sleep after watching a really moving episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
  21. I find myself making comparisons in my everyday life to things I see and feel from One Tree Hill.

  25. I can honestly see the growth in my life from year to year of my life. It is not as much as I wish it was, but it still gives me some satisfaction.
  26. I love having a list and checking things off of it once they are accomplished. I have trouble focusing on other things until the list is completely crossed out.
  27. My mind constantly wanders and I am often thinking of lyrics that would be good for a song. (How does this reconcile with number 26?)
  28. Alanis Morrissette’s “Ironic” has been stuck in my head since I heard it for the first time in 1996 in the barber shop. Probably the catchiest hook of all time.
  29. Snow genuinely brings joy to my entire soul.
  30. No place makes me more relaxed/reflective as the beach. (Again, how do these go together?)
  31. I did not understand any of Geometry. I’m not even sure how I passed it, because it genuinely did not even compute in my brain. I got a B.
  32. I find myself defending almost everyone, even if I don’t know them. Maybe Britney was having a really hard day when shaved her head and she just wanted a totally fresh start. Maybe Kelly Clarkson had a cold when she sounded off that one time at halftime.
  33. 33 is my favorite number. It was Grant Hill’s basketball number, there are three members of Out of Eden, and it follows me around. Seriously, it is weird how much the number 3 or 33 pops up in my day-to-day life.
  34. Out of Eden attended my sixteenth dance birthday party. They stayed for 45 minutes, danced, sang Happy Birthday to me, and recorded a video message. I am forever indebted to Steve Cherrico for this.
  35. My magic number of sleep hours is 7. I am still tired after 6 or 8 hours, and of course, I would love to sleep for ten hours every night, but I feel the best after 7.

  42. There are only two people I genuinely resent knowing, but even so, they helped me figure out a TON of stuff about myself and I am grateful for that.

  47. Coffee shops make me feel cozy.
  48. I am a really fast reader. I still retain information, but I am much faster than most people. I don’t know why, but I know that I got it from my Mom.

  50. There are some people I have lost in my life that I can honestly say I think about every single day.

  54. Reese Witherspoon always makes me smile in movies. Always.
  55. I won the school-wide Spelling Bee in third grade, but I choked in the first round of Regionals.
  56. The lunch lady and I won 2nd place out of about 50 in a 4-H cookie-baking contest when I was in fourth grade. The questions is, what was I doing hanging out with the lunch lady?
  57. The first girl I actually asked out (not a boyfriend/girlfriend thing, but a will you go to the dance with me thing) said yes. Her name was Erica McCurley and it was in eighth grade. She was white, but didn’t act like it. Kind of embarrassing. I wanted to ask Amber Haynes, who was black and a lot prettier, but her swagger was a little too intimidating. She had it.
  58. When I hear backup singers do really good harmonies, I almost just can’t even handle it. It is literally too much for my ears sometimes and I just shout.

  68. My sister, Ashleigh has the uncanny ability to make me laugh harder than any human on the entire planet. Period.
  69. A night where me and some friends cook dinner, play games, talk, and watch a movie is infinitely more appealing than going out and partying.
  70. I am really good cook and drink mixer. It is a natural talent, I dare say.
  71. Eagles are my favorite animals for a variety of reasons.
  72. Most people might not believe it, but I’m actually a competent rapper. And I write some pretty killer lyrics. I entered a rap battle once with my friend, Casey Chaos once and absolutely slayed the competition. I’m just saying.
  73. When I was about 15, I broke my leg while roller-skating. I then fell down the stairs and broke my wrist, so I had the pleasure of being in a wheelchair because I couldn’t use crutches with a broken wrist.
  74. I once called 911 because I heard someone in our garage while I was home alone. I didn’t know that my Dad had told my cousin to come get the lawn mower, so the police pointed guns at him and told him to put his hands up. Sorry, Butch.
  75. I don’t eat the pink Starbursts.
  76. I know exactly what I would sing if I were on American Idol. I even have some of the songs rearranged in my head. Let’s just say it would be a variety. From Keith Urban to Alicia Keys to SWV. It’s so crucial.

  82. I want to visit Maine. I don’t think I know anyone who has ever been there and every picture I have ever seen looks beautiful. Plus, when I was really young, I heard that it is the only state in the continental 48 that has no known breeds of snakes. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it sounded so good to me as a little boy.
  83. I’m pretty sure Heaven is gonna be a lot more amazing than what most people think.
  84. I am over-analytical. I analyze pretty much everything people say and do to the brink of insanity. I don’t know how to stop.
  85. I always check behind the shower curtain when I go in the bathroom. I don’t know what I will do if I ever discover someone in there waiting for me, but I will NOT be the victim of a sneak attack.

  91. My DVD collection is not only alphabetized, but the Music DVDs have their own alphabetized section within the whole collection.

To True Love

You know that feeling when you can’t help but smile when you see or think about a certain person? It’s one of my favorite feelings. It usually happens when you meet someone new and interesting and attractive. But, you know when it’s even better? When you haven’t seen someone in a really long time and you forget just how happy they can make you. There really is something special about your first love. Something about a summer night always makes it feel ten times better, but here’s to the hope of finding someone that brings the smile to your face, no matter the weather. No matter the time or the place or the circumstances. Here’s to true love.

More To It All

I want to matter. I want to make a difference. Surely, I was made for more than just to have fun with friends and family. Don’t get me wrong, that’s amazing. I am so blessed. I have a good life. But, I want a great life. When I look inside, I am excited. I like what I see. God gave me amazing gifts. I have a huge heart. I have a great capacity for love and empathy. But, when I see my reflection, I hate who I see. I want to change. It is so hard, but I owe it to myself. I need to learn to love myself enough to make the changes I know I need to make.

I am not who I was. I am daring and adventurous. I am a lover and a fighter. I love the outdoors. I want to love and be loved. I want to make music. I am honest and forthright. I am open and kind to all. I look and leap at the same time. I give of myself and I love myself enough to find friends who give of themselves to me.

Doesn’t it get old? Don’t the vapid fillers ever feel tired? Don’t our hearts find slivers of truth and latch onto them, only to replace them with heaps of the meaningless? Are our questions ever answered? Do we even want to really know?

This life is so strange and beautiful and fragile and brutal. We so greatly need to face it every day to our fullest capacity. There is no time left for ordinary days. Even our relaxation should be great.

Is love really enough? Do purpose and meaning, those rare finds for which we all strive, actually come to those who search long enough?

I will find out. I will be able to say I tried. I tried everything. I made mistakes. I triumphed. I failed. I excelled. I gave. I took. I lived…It is time

Brandon

New Singles of Note (02.04.08)

Well, here is a breakdown of new singles I think you should hear.

Carrie Underwood - How Great Thou Art (Live)
http://wm.allaccess.com/allaccess/carrhowg.wma

I don't think it gets any better than that. Incredible!

Onerepublic - Stop and Stare
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5o3ao8iguJg

The guys behind "Apologize" show another side and I love it.

Danity Kane - Damaged
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kUtFdU0MwIo

The band that Diddy made grows some legs with a hot dance pop song.

Jesse McCartney - Leavin'
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kn97nyhPceE

A total departure from Disney pop to Chris Brown-esque Hip-Pop that shows a creatively refreshed McCartney. Interesting and original with a great melody.

So, that's what's up. What do you think?

Keep your eyes open,
Brandon

Heath, Oscars, and more

Well, this was quite a day.

Heath Ledger was found dead today in his apartment. This is obviously very sad news. He was quite an actor and had a long career in front of him. Life is beyond fragile and every single second matters.

Also, Oscar nominations were announced today. I have actually seen many of this year's nominated films, like "Atonement", "No Country for Old Men", "Ratatouille", "The Bourne Ultimatum", and "Once". Going to see "There Will Be Blood" on Wednesday and I will post a review.

I also have reviews coming for new albums fron Natasha Bedingfield and Jon Foreman, so be on the lookout for those. Sorry for not updating faithfully, but I will fix that.

And, last but definitely not least, please find the time to read "The Shack" by William Young. It is more than life-changing. I can't even express to you how important it is for anyone with any questions about God. Obviously, it does not answer them all, but it points to a way to have them all answered, an actual relationship with God. Not at all like we have been taught. It challenged everything I have ever believed and it was amazing.

Keep Your Eyes Open,
Brandon

Grammy Nominations: Victories & Snubs

So, the Grammy nominations have been announced for 2008. For the most part, I was pretty happy with them. Rihanna got lots of love (6 total nominations) for her killer year. Kanye, Amy Winehouse, Carrie Underwood, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Feist, Paramore, Dierks Bentley, Timbaland, Beyonce, Vince Gill, and others were recognized for their incredible contributions to music this year...

BUT...

There were a few unforgivable snubs.

Kelly Clarkson - She got one nomination for her duet with Reba in the Country Collaboration category, but she absolutely should have been nominated in Pop Vocal Album and Pop Female Vocal Performance for My December and "Never Again" respectively. This was easily her best album and most critics agreed, but no love...

Robin Thicke - The biggest R&B song of the year chart-wise and not one nomination. Should have had a lock on the R&B categories as well as Song and/or Record of the Year.

Fergie - She has one nomination for Pop Female Vocal Performance for "Big Girls Don't Cry". She had the third best-selling album of the year and THREE top five singles.

Elliott Yamin - Not a single nomination for Mr. Yamin and his monster hit, "Wait For You". Pop Male Vocal Performance and Best New Artist should have been his.

Favorite Singles of 2007

So, here it is. This is the list of my personal favorite singles of 2007. They may not be the technical best of the year, but they were my faves. I divided them into categories and then listed other great singles that I loved but didn't make the final nine. What do you think?

Pissed-Off Single of the Year
Kelly Clarkson – Never Again

I’m still not sure why this wasn’t a hit of “Since U Been Gone” proportions. I guess maybe not everyone gets as pissed as Kelly and I do. Clarkson had to prove herself with her third album, and artistically, she did just that. Taking a page from the book of Alanis, Clarkson scorns a lover with rage and ferocity. You can almost see fangs coming out of her mouth…and it’s perfect. Her voice is strong and commanding, and the music is far edgier than previous efforts. Clarkson is moving in a new direction, and I will gladly follow.

Sexiest Single of the Year
Robin Thicke – Lost Without U

Thicke’s gorgeous falsetto swoops around a lilting acoustic guitar lick in this unforgettable song that redefined sensuality on the radio. The lyrics of this song are so desperate for attention that you can almost feel him leaning forward to sing it directly into his wife’s eyes. Incredible Melody? Check. Beautiful voice? Check. Lyrics that make even the most prudish lover want to jump in bed? Check. We have a winner.

Most Inspirational Single of the Year
Carrie Underwood – So Small

You read that right. Ms. Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” is not the song making the cut on this year’s list. It was released last year but is still being played fiercely this year. All that aside, Underwood co-wrote this uplifting tune about taking time to prioritize the things that truly matter in life, and they all have to do with one thing: love. Strings crescendo into a musical climax that is only matched by the power and passion in Underwood’s voice, which only gets better and better with time. I dare you not to close your eyes and think about the ones close to you.

Feel Good Single of the Year
Alicia Keys – No One

This one was almost the single of the year, but “Umbrella” was just too big. At any rate, this is Keys’ finest single to date, which is saying something. The melody is straight-forward, the beat pounding, the lyrics simple, and the whole package is undeniable. All of this is punctuated by Keys’ voice…and what a voice! She sounds in control, but barely. It’s as if the passion and conviction in her voice control her. It’s happy, groovy, and most importantly, a great song.

Most Danceable Single of the Year
Mika – Grace Kelly

So, I certainly expected to be putting a song from Justin, Britney, or Beyonce in this category, but when I hear this song, I just cannot keep still. Mika’s voice is polarizing, to say the least, but it is so joyful and flamboyant, that when paired with a plunking piano and bass and ridiculous lyrics, it is unstoppable. Every time I hear it, I throw my arms up and start dancing around. And I’m not talking the Soulja Boy. Joyful, unashamed dancing, straight from my soul. It looks ridiculous and I don’t even care. Now, that is something to dance about.

Most Surprising Single of the Year
Fergie – Big Girls Don’t Cry

Fergie-ferg released three singles in a row that were catchy, but ridiculous. So knowingly ridiculous, that everyone enjoyed them while they laughed at themselves. Then, to my surprise, Miss Ferguson released this lovely, unapologetically pop song. It proved a few things. First, Fergie actually has pipes. She sometimes sacrifices their integrity for a hot beat, but when focused, she is a rather convincing vocalist. Second, she was meant for melody. Chanting and spelling are fun, but a unique voice paired with a timeless melody are needed in pop music today.

Most Passionate Single of the Year
Paramore – Misery Business

It doesn’t even matter that she is singing about high school drama. Her voice is so strong, so convincing, so…passionate that she could be singing about how much she loves Toby Keith and I would still love it. The lyrics are actually much better than I originally thought. You just have to listen to it several times to hear what she is actually singing. And man, can she sing. The wail on this girl is almost unmatched. Here’s to the start of a long career.

Heartstring Tugger of the Year
Kelly Clarkson - Sober

You read that right. The album, My December, has not even hit platinum status since its summer release, yet there are two singles from it on my list. If you’ve heard this song though, I don’t know how you could argue. Clarkson wails about the perils and pain of addiction (To a person? Substance? Situation? Does it matter?), amidst a simple background of acoustic guitar and quiet strings. Then, all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose, and the music sweeps up to hurricane strength to try and catch up to Clarkson’s powerhouse vocal performance. Anyone who has been in an addictive situation with anyone or anything will feel it so deep in their soul, it is almost unexplainable.

And finally...

Single of the Year
Rihanna – Umbrella

This was certainly the most inescapable song of the year 2007. Besides being played on nearly every type of station across the country (Who else would’ve like to hear Taylor Swift cover it for country?), it was covered by no less than 10 artists while it was still on the charts. Everyone from Mandy Moore to Travis Barker released a version of the hit, but none compared to the original. Ms. Fenty, better known as Rihanna, has only been churning out hits for two years, but released her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, this year. Full of potential singles, this is the clear standout track. It’s dark. It’s bright. It’s muddy. It’s hopeful. It’s…love. Her voice straddles impassioned and carefree, often in the same line. The synth swirls around a fierce, crisp drum tack that won’t quit. Jay-Z opens the track with an arguably unnecessary guest rap, but nothing can take away from the ferocity of this song. Grammys, let’s not let her youth scare us from acknowledging the only choice for single of the year.

The Best of the Rest…

There were so many incredible songs this year released as singles. Here is my list of other noteworthy songs released this year. Whether they had my toes tapping, my head swirling, or my voice singing along, this is the best of the rest of 2007.
